Help with kitchen design decision

Decisions, decisions!  I have some design decisions to make, and I'd like to ask for your help!

Our house was built in late 2004, so it's now nearly 10 years old.  There are so many things about this house we love, but we'd like to make a few updates, particularly in the kitchen.  Here's my kitchen as it is right now:

I'm not going to be making huge changes, but I do want to update the look of this room.  For instance, I've grown tired of the tumbled marble backsplash.  I'm thinking I'll change this out to a lighter tile, such as an off-white subway tile.  I think that would look good with my granite (which is not changing--way too expensive!) and help to provide a lighter, brighter kitchen.

At the moment I'm trying to decide what to do with my range hood, and I'd love your help!  I've been thinking that I'd like to go with a large stainless steel hood over the range, perhaps like one of these kitchens:

I snapped this photo in a showroom.
I especially like the photo below.  As you can see, this kitchen is warm and homey, not at all industrial-looking.

Or perhaps I should have my range hood cabinetry made smaller and a range hood installed below it, like this:

Or maybe I should think of having the range hood cabinetry altered into more of a focal point, like this one:

Another option would be keeping my current wood range hood but perhaps painting it a complementary color or something to make it stand out a bit more.

So many choices!!  I'd love your opinions:  do you think I should go for a stainless steel range hood, or should I do something with wood?   Is it a downgrade to remove a custom wood hood and install stainless steel?  If you have a stainless steel hood, do you like it?  Any suggestions for me?  Any photos you think I should see?

Thanks so much for your help!

  1. Oh the last picture with the shelf is by far my favorite- and a dream for my own kitchen! I just can't see that ever looking dated.

  2. I like the last option. It definitely adds definitions. I think the stainless would not go with the feel of your kitchen. It would be to industrial. But, that is my very amateur opinion.=)

  3. Hmmm....have you thought about covering the existing range hood with copper, bronze or another type of sheet metal...if that is the look you are moving toward. I also like the idea of painting it a contrasting color! Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will look gorgeous!

  4. How exciting! Stainless is just a bit too contemporary for my taste, but I love the last one with the shelf. We're in the middle of our kitchen remodel and this is the style I am considering.
Can't wait to see what you choose...

  5. It looks great the way that it is. No need to change and of the options you shared, I think the way it currently is designed is the best.

  6. Hi Richella Parham, Such a great color choice for this area! In our previous home, almost all the walls were a similar yellow to yours. I loved it at the time, but I'm really liking lighter neutrals now. Of course painting would be your first project of the new year!colorful room design

  7. I like it the way it is -- or the last picture with the display shelf above. Going with the industrial style stainless hoods doesn't fit the style of your kitchen ... I think.

  8. I would change the paint on the walls first- Something light and neutral?? Also I'd replace the window shade with a different pattern?? Color?? Style?? Also love the last range hood idea too!

  9. I would leave it alone. It is beautiful. My kitchen is very small so yours would be a HUGE delight to me.

  10. You have a lovely warm kitchen. Having said that I think that the stainless would be a little cold and contemporary. I love the shelf idea or even just painting it a contrasting color. People pay big money for those hoods, a shame to demolish it:)

  11. I'd have to go with the last option too...I just don't care for the hanging range hoods...too much of a focal point on something I don't personally want to be a focal point. You have a great kitchen by the way...can't wait to see what new colors you plan for it.

  12. I like the stainless steel hood. It would mix things up a little and it sounds like that is what you are looking to do. That being said I love your cabinets!

  13. I would not change the hood. I love it the way it is. If changed, maybe the last one. I think the tile change might lighten things and I agree with previous comment about lightening the wall color. Keep it a warm shade, but more neutral or even with a hint of yellow (gold)?

  14. Hi there, I love your kitchen as it is but understand your desire to make some changes. I always think that changing paint is probably the cheapest way to go and it can dramatically lighten up a look. In our new house we have a stainless steel hood; as far as the pics above, I really love the last one. I'm not sure how subway tile would look-it really isn't my style, but considering that I love everything about your house, I'm sure your choices will be perfect.

  15. I think lightening up to neutrals for the walls and hood is the best way to update. Your hood is not out of style by any means! It really looks nice in your kitchen.

  16. I would see what you could do to spruce up your current range, but personally I love the wood covered options. :)

  17. Richella, how exciting to do some more updates. I don't care for stainless, but you have to do what you like. I do love the last hood with the shelf and wish I had that. A big copper hood would look better than stainless in your home. Your home is very traditional and stainless is more modern. I agree with others about painting the room lighter. That will make a huge difference on brightening up the space. Mine used to be green and when I painted it off white it was the best thing I ever did.
    good luck!

  18. Hello Richella, I do not care for stainless steel either! But painting it is an option! Because the lighter colors you are adding will make a huge change! Hope your feeling better.

  19. Well, I like the last option the best if you are going to change. I think the free hanging stainless steel is a bit industrial looking and you have a very warm feeling going on there. I like the idea of subway tile but I also think that the tumbled marble looks good with your granite. I think if you paint and neutralize a bit the kitchen will take on a whole new look and you may not feel like you need any radical changes. People are still installing everything you have there-at least in this part of the country- so nothing really looks "dated" yet. xo Diana

  20. Love the subway tile - so Drew Scott of Property Brothers. I like the smaller stainless steel hood but I have a radical idea - to go with your color palette, what about copper (or faux copper since it's so expensive)? Stainless will show EVERY fingerprint, smudge, etc. and will keep the dust, too (trust me, I know). What I would give for a kitchen like yours, though!

  21. I am assuming that all your appliances are stainless, in which case I think stainless would look good - if you go with stainless the one in the next to last picture is less contemporary and would work better in a more traditional style kitchen. Painting your existing hood a contrasting color could work too, but if that is the only wood you painted, I think it might look odd - I would suggest painting the center island cabinets the same color. You have a lot of cabinets and painting the island would mix it up a little. I'm sure whatever you decide it will be beautiful. At the end of the day, all our opinions are just that, and you are the one who has to live with your decision - so trust your gut.

  22. I too like the range in the last picture. I think you're range is beautiful, just sticks out too much taking away from the rest of your kitchen :)

  23. My favorite is the range in the last picture.

  24. I like the last option. You don't want the range hood as a huge focal point. You have a beautiful kitchen!

  25. I've always loved your kitchen for its homeyness, so I think I would consider doing something similar to the last photo or simply painting the one you have which is beautiful. I think the stainless would look too industrial for your kitchen. Good luck, making those decisions are never easy!
