The truth about the new blue Mason jars

You've probably seen photos of the new blue Mason jars that Ball has released.  If not, you should!  These are a limited edition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the "perfect Mason jar."  And look--they're gorgeous!

But how do they compare to vintage jars?  Well, you be the judge:

Ball doesn't claim that the new jars are identical to the vintage jars, just that their color is inspired by vintage jars.  I'd say they've done a great job of capturing the lovely color.  Only a vintage jar can hold that beautiful time-worn patina, of course, but these new jars are just beautiful.

And now they're probably available at a retailer near you!  I found mine at my local Target.  The price was $10.96 for six jars (including lids and bands).

As you can see, they make gorgeous flower vases.  My humble hydrangeas are transported into a lovely centerpiece just by virtue of being placed in these jars.

And of course they'd make wonderful drinking glasses, especially if you paired them with a lid that contains a hole for a drinking straw.  If you have the right equipment, you could easily make your own straw-lids.  I don't have the right equipment, so I'm going to buy a package of lids from Etsy Shop24.  This shop is run by the kids of my friend Lisa of The Pennington Point, so I'm glad to support their work--and then I'll have great gorgeous blue Mason jar drinking glasses!  (If you can't find blue jars, Shop24 also sells the blue jars complete with drinking lid as well as many other beautiful things!)

One last shot of the porch:

Have you seen these jars?  Planning to get some of your own?

**I have no formal affiliation with any company mentioned in this post; I just love this product!**

  1. They are so pretty. I went to a wedding the other week where at the reception everyone drank out of mason jars. It was really cute and a lot of fun. It's crazy how popular mason jars are right now.

  3. These have been popping up all over the place. Two years ago I won 6 vintage blue jars in a giveaway. I think they are both super fun.

    Your porch is lovely.

  4. I bought a set before leaving for Colorado and we are using them for drinking glasses and vases all over our drab apartment. It was worth the space in the car!

  6. I think the new ones are fun but I did notice the color is different. The old color still attracts me more.

  9. Hi there, You are right in that they are as beautiful as vintage ones. I have a couple from the mid-70's that we use for coins but may have to get some for flowers-I love the look.

  10. Richella, what a timely post. I just picked up some of the jars this morning and although they are a somewhat different color from the vintage jars, I am pleased with my purchase.

  11. Your hydrangeas look lovely! I bought some of these jars some time ago at the Ball Canning website. I love the color and plan to use them as drinking glasses too. :)

I'm in the process of packing to move on the 28th so haven't used them yet.

    Enjoy!

  16. Good Afternoon Richella, The blue of the Mason jars is such a lovely colour and paired with your beautiful hydrangeas look delightful.
The first time I was given a Mason jar to use as a glass was when I visited my daughter in Atlanta. One of her lovely friends invited us for an evening meal, but before we ate we were offered a drink from a Mason jar. Being English, we thought how odd to be given a jam jar to drink out of..... something which would never happen in England, but when she explained the history behind the Mason jar, we understood why we were drinking from Mason jars. It's lovely learning about different customs.
    Have a lovely day,
    Best Wishes

  17. I have some of the vintage ones that I love but am also more careful with. I would love some of the new ones to use outdoors for drinking and as vases that I don't have to worry so much about breaking. Happy they came out with these.

  18. I think I would copy you and fill them with flowers! But maybe I'd use one in the office to corral all the pens. Thanks for keeping your blog full of creativity and food for thought. I appreciate you!
