Super-easy DIY placemats

If you're like me, you like to set a pretty table for holiday meals such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, but you don't necessarily own enough tableware for large gatherings.  I have plenty of china, but I seem to own placemats only in sets of eight.

When I happened upon this product in the wedding supply section of Walmart, inspiration struck.  It cost $5.00 a roll.

I measured one of my placemats and decided on a width of 19" per mat.  Then I simply cut the runner (it's so easy to cut straight across burlap!)

and fringed both sides.  (Just pull out however many strings you like to form a fringe; I pulled five strings on each end).

VoilĂ !  Instant placemat!

Now I can set a pretty table for four or fourteen!

Need a bunch of placemats? Here's a simple, inexpensive way to make your own in just a couple of minutes! Super-easy DIY placemats @ ImpartingGrace.com

I got a great idea for setting a table for lots of people when I was privileged to attend a bloggers' luncheon at the beautiful home of Shirley of Housepitality Designs.  To accommodate more people at the table, she turned her placemats lengthwise and let the ends dangle off the table.  Isn't that brilliant?  This would work easily with my burlap placemats.

Do you have any tips for setting a pretty table?  I'd love to hear them!

Clever idea, dear friend!!!
I, too, adore turning the placemat sideways to accommodate more guests!!!
When hosting a Dinner Party, I was phoned to ask if one couple could bring their 88 year~old Mother.
I quickly responded, "Yes!!! There's always room for one more"!
Then I slid a square card table under the end of my oval dining room table,
placed a white linen tablecloth atop with a small, similar centerpiece and set it for two,
one across from the other!!! It looked as if it had always been planned that way!!!
The Mother was thrilled to join in our evening of fellowship, food and friends!!!
The couple thanked me several times!!!
So~o~o. . .remember, to add another table at the end and adjust the seating
to include all who come to feast at the table with welcoming smiles!!!

That makes a perfect placemat. I remember seeing the placemats turned sideways at Shirley's house. As for me- I steal inspiration wherever I can find it! xo Diana

What great ideas from you and Shirley! You could also use that burlap for a quick table runner! I'm heading to Walmart to pick up a roll just in case I need it!!

That is such a good idea for inexpensive and easy placemats, Richella! I covered some of my inexpensive chargers with burlap, using homemade modpodge......I guess we should always have a stash of burlap!
