Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday. Today for the first time I read this poem titled "The Donkey." I thought you might enjoy it, too.

When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born;

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil's walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me; I am dumb.
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

G. K. Chesterton, 1874

The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:

Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!

Then Jesus, when He had had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

"Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey's colt."

His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him" (John 12:12-16, NKJV).

This week and every week, I pray that God will give me the heart to recognize Jesus.

  1. What a beautiful post. I have never heard that poem before! Have a wonderful, blessed Sunday- xo Diana

  2. This poem is new to me too. Thinking about this week and what it means to me.

  3. Thanks for sharing that. It is a poignant reminder...

  4. Thanks for the great reminder of this special week. I desperately don't want Easter Sunday to sneak up on me and me have forgotten all the events that lead up to his resurrection. I am so thankful He chose to lose His life for mine.

  5. We read from St. Matthew at church yesterday and this morning the reading was St. john - exactly what you quoted.

    Love Chesterton!
    Blessings during passion-tide.
