A treat for your hands

With all the things that you do to make your home an inviting space, do you ever end up with your hands looking like this?

Me too. And I've been inspired to do something about that. I guess I could wear gloves, but I'm not very good at handling things while wearing gloves, so instead I've come up with a way to care for my hands after I've abused them.

Simply take some kosher salt (coarse but not rocky)

and mix it with some oil. You can use whatever kind of oil you like. Olive oil is very nice. Or you can use this:

It contains aloe vera and other nutrients and smells like the beach.

Simply mix the salt and oil together. The mixture will be coarse and crumbly; the oil doesn't dissolve the salt. (If you tend to have lots of cuts and scratches on your hands and want to avoid using salt, try turbinado sugar instead of salt.)

Store the mixture in a plastic or glass container. I keep mine in a little crock by the kitchen sink.

To use, take a handful of the mixture and massage it gently for about sixty seconds, then wash your hands. They'll be as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Enjoy!

  7. I love this idea! I clean with my hands and nails, without a care to how my hands look, just want to clean all the nooks and crannies in my home...and it shows, grrrr...but that's an easy way to pamper myself.

  8. Love this! I made up big batches of this scrub for Christmas this year. I use the same salt, olive oil, a bit of handsoap (gives you suds) and a few drops of whatever essential oils I have around. I like orange, lavender and eucalyptus. So decadent, great for pedicures too! And fyi it gets grease, mechanic grime and other guy stuff off their hands too. My manly man even uses the orange one without any coaxing from me--and I'm not complaining! Clean AND soft hands=happy wife!

  10. I would never have thought of using tanning oil! That's a great idea! I just scrubbed my hands and feet down with a sugar scrub that I made at Christmas. It's amazing how soft your skin can feel after using a few simple kitchen ingredients.

  11. Thanks, Richella! This is a great tip! I love to massage my hands and feet with almond oil so I'll try this using that.
