Sometimes you DIY; sometimes you don't

DIY Day @ ASPTL

It's DIY Day at Kimba's, and I've been so excited to participate! Last week I was the sponsor of DIY Day, so I figured that today would be a great time to showcase a real knock-your-socks-off DIY project of my own.

Well, you can keep your socks on.

I love DIY Day, although sometimes I struggle with feelings of DIY inadequacy. I love to look at all the incredible things that bloggers have done for themselves, and most times I am impressed and inspired and energized to try new projects for myself. Sometimes, though, when I read about the brilliant things that people have accomplished, I just end up feeling like the kid at Show and Tell who brought her pet rock on the day that Suzy brought her pet python.

This week, though--this week was going to be my chance to shine. This week I was going to dazzle readers with my own project. I woke up in the middle of the night with inspiration for a project that I felt sure would create a sensation.

And it didn't work.

Honestly, I thought I had a good idea. I really thought it would work. I thought it would be simple and inexpensive yet beautiful and impressive. I tried to Do It Myself. And I failed.

This has been one of those weeks. My beautiful project flopped. I started a big organization project, but I haven't finished it yet. I bought some new light fixtures for my kitchen, but they're still in their boxes. I wanted to try a new recipe, but that got crowded out by another commitment. And so on and so forth.

Perhaps I needed to remember that my life as a wife, mother, sister, friend, and neighbor does not center around my projects. Maybe I need to focus a little less on doing and showing and telling and a little more on just being and learning and listening.

What about you?

  1. Well, even if you "failed"at your DIY project, you SUCCEEDED at making me feel so good! Thank you for your gift of words on my blog.
And yes, it is such a beautiful thing how God is using blogging to connect sisters in Christ.
I could definitely use some prayers this month. We are going to give IVF one more try this upcoming month. More than anything, I just want a peace from the Lord and for His will to be done...and for me to be ok with whatever He decides!
Thank you for such a sweet comment! You will never know how much that lifted my spirits today.
    Your sister in Christ,
    Sarah

  2. Oh what a great post! I need this advice right now. I am new to blogging and I find myself spending a lot of time in front of the computer and not doing! Doing things I love like cooking and baking. Thank you for these words you spoke tonight. I needed them.

  3. Richella,
I have totally been there before. I have stressed out so many times because I didn't have a great project to share, and I think, "What in the world am I stressing about? My life will go on even if I don't finish this project." I am trying to learn how to keep things in perspective in this blogging world.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  4. Amen...I needed this today! I find myself feeling this way too often. And you know what...I really shouldn't even let myself go there. We beat ourselves up way too much. Remember last week when you reminded me of that??? We can only do so much. And the most important things...aren't things at all!!!

    Love you
    ~Amanda

  5. Um...yes! I love doing little projects, and esp. reading about them for DIY day, but one of the things I encounter is a feeling of inadequacy when I see how awesome everyone else is. ;)

  6. Amen! The desire in all of us to 'show and tell' is probably due to many reasons. But, I think one of the reasons is because we are created in His image and He is creative; therefore, we are creative and desire to create. But I think my desire can also arise from the fact that 'doing' seems so much more measurable than 'being.' Especially when others seem to be 'doing' things so measurably well! Also, it takes so much self-discipline for me to 'be' still at the Lord's feet. Thanks for the timely reminder....and I'm so glad you found your necklace. Your sweet hubby sounds a lot like mine. :) Blessings ~

  7. Beautifully put. Perhaps you don't have a "project" contribution for DIY this week...but clearly you HAVE contributed to DIY day with your honesty. Thank you for sharing your heart.

  8. Yeah for you! Sometimes I think it's easy to get stuck, feeling like have to perform as homemakers or mommies or wives...or whatever other roles we have. Letting life take the lead is much better-sometimes our responsibilities to some things cause us to reshift what we do-and that's okay.

Thanks for keeping it real, and for the encouragement to focus less on doing!

  9. I love you for keeping it real. How many times has this happened to me?? I think I've got a fabulous idea and it just FLOPS...we have all been there. My favorite is the show and tell rock/python analogy though :)
