Mighty mountains

Today I'm heading to the mountains.  I can't wait to reach their rugged beauty, their splendor, and especially their cool temperatures!

We took this photo in the Alps several years ago.
I began my mountain love affair when I was a little girl.  I'll never forget the first time I saw The Sound of Music.  I was absolutely riveted by the scene in which Maria talks with the Reverend Mother of the Abbey and the Reverend Mother says to her, "Remember: 'I will up mine eyes unto the hills; from whence cometh my help."

At the time, I thought the Reverend Mother was telling Maria that help would be coming from the mountains.  Of course, the Reverend Mother would have known better.  She would have known the next verse.

"My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth."  (Psalm 121)

Although I love the poetry of the old King James Version, I like the straight talk of The Message for these verses:

I lift up my eyes to the hills
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
  who made heaven and earth.

All too often I'm prone to think that my help will come from different scenery, cooler weather, or the beauty of my surroundings.  But of course then I'm following the age-old tendency to worship the creation rather than the Creator.

This trip, I'm hoping to keep my mind on the One who made the majestic mountains--the One who is the real source of my help.

How about you?  Is there a part of God's creation that especially reminds you of His loving care?

  4. Two years ago I had a fall at work and shattered my humerus and broke me kneecap in half. I spent more than a month on my back during my rehab process. Through that time I did a lot of looking up. I snapped a photo of the sky as I was being taken into rehab. I remember asking the ambulance workers to stop as they were taking me in so I could snap the photo. I don't remember how I even accomplished it as I had the use of only one arm, but I felt the need to snap that picture with my cell phone. During my time in rehab I looked that that photo often. It was and still is a great reminder to me of where my help comes from. I love the mountains and the sky. The mountains with their majestic views and their peaks which point us to Heaven are among my most favorite of God's creation. I love the sky as well, because it is a reminder of the Savior and the home He is preparing for me.

  5. You're not going to believe this, but I have a bit of a fear of the mountains. They close me in, and, as a flatlander my whole life, I don't like that feeling. I need space and freedom and to be able to see as far as my eye takes me. I feel God's power at the ocean; when I hear the waves crash against the shore I am amazed at the force of the water and it reminds me of His strong and mighty hand. Love this post, friend!
