One thing I prize about my life is having three sons. I loved having little boys, and I love having big boys. Nothing makes me happier than having them and a bunch of their friends in my home.
Over the years I've learned there's one thing that's absolutely true about a household that includes three boys: a lot of food is consumed. A whole lot.
That's fine with me. I like to cook, and my house includes this nice big kitchen:
But honestly, I can't cook enough to keep up with the all the eating needs of a busy family. Now, I know there are some of you who never use convenience foods, and my hat is off to you. I just can't do it. I do a lot of cooking from scratch, and my husband and sons cook, too. But in our busy household, I've always appreciated some convenience foods, particularly snack foods.
One of the problems with most snack foods, though, is that they're awfully shy on protein. My guys can eat chips and crackers and cookies with the best of them, but those foods won't keep an active kid going for very long. Most snack foods provide mostly carbohydrates, which is great for providing quick energy but is burned up pretty quickly.
Through the years we've come up with some creative ways to include more protein with our snack foods. When my boys were small, I cut pieces of cheese into fun shapes with cookie cutters. One of the boys went through a stage of eating beef jerky every day. Particularly memorable was a snack one of them created by stacking a cheddar cracker, a piece of Hormel turkey pepperoni, and a small square of cheese. That was actually a pretty tasty concoction!
Finding convenient, easy-to-grab-and-go snacks that included a lot of protein has always been a challenge, though--until now. I was tickled to get to try a new product made by the same company that makes that turkey pepperoni we've enjoyed for years: HORMEL®. HORMEL® REV® Wraps are made with real meat and cheese, come in several different varieties, and each one contains at least 12 grams of protein! Packaged in airtight but easy-to-open sleeves, they're super convenient. They can be heated, but my boys actually preferred them straight out of the fridge--they're truly a grab-and-go food, but they provide the sustainable energy active young people need.
One of my boys is currently undergoing a pretty tough physical training regimen. In addition to meals, he also makes himself protein shakes on a regular basis. Last week, though, he was pressed for time and needed something that he could pick up on his way out the door. I was so glad that I had HORMEL® REV® Wraps in the fridge! He grabbed a wrap and a bottle of water and was on his way.
Honestly, sometimes I feel that teenagers today are too busy. My boys are older now, and I see that their younger friends are getting busier all the time! Between school, extra-curricular activities, part-time jobs, and all the rest, it seems that teenagers are on the go an awful lot. But at least with high-protein snacks such as REV® Wraps, teens can get the energy they need in order to go the distance.
Which REV® Wrap would you like to try while you are on the go? Tell me in the comments for a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card!
