Decorating decision to make--please help!

Hello, friends!  Hope you all had a wonderful Easter.

Today I need your help.  This week is a big painting week at my house, and I'm having trouble deciding on a color for my kitchen.

I have made a little progress.  Green is my favorite color, so I've decided I want to stay in the green family.  The kitchen is currently painted a very neutral color--a dark sage that's on the tan side called Ruskin Room Green by Sherwin Williams.

Here's my kitchen now.  In these photos the green looks a good bit brighter than it does in real life, but this will give you an idea of what I'm working with.  There's not too much wall space on this end:

Lots of wall space on this end:

I think I want to go a bit lighter and brighter in here, so I'm thinking about Sherwin Williams "Sassy Green."

SW6416 Sassy Green

An alternative would be the next lighter tint, Sherwin Williams Hearts of Palm:

SW6415 Hearts Of Palm

Here's a paint chip of the Sassy Green right on top of my Ruskin Room Green walls.  You can see here that the Sassy Green is much greener than the current Ruskin Room Green.

What do you think?  Do you like the Sassy Green and/or Hearts of Palm?  Help a sister out and let me know your opinion, please!

  1. I also am thinking about painting my kitchen green. I think it's such a soothing color. I would be concerned that sassy green might be too bright especially where you have the big expanse of wall. Have you thought about a paler, lighter green?

  2. I don't have an opinion on your sassy green, but I do have a thought. You have done such a great job of laying a foundation that lends itself to almost any color. Your cabinets, furniture, trim, etc. are all lovely but simple so you could really do any color you wanted and change the look of the whole room. I can't wait to see the after pictures! Lisa~

  9. I have Hearts of Palm in my grands bedrooms ~ it is a pretty shade of green. Would it help to email you pics of the bedrooms to see it on big walls? Although with lighting all rooms are different. My kitchen is green too, but it is a ben. moore ivy lane.. Green just is the perfect neutral and I know yours would look great in H of P.

  10. I just LOVE Hearts of Palm. The other shade is pretty but a bit dark. Good luck, whatever you decide!!!

  11. It would help to know which direction the windows face in your dining area? In the photos it looks like late afternoon sun, so I will guess south or west. Evening light is more yellow, that's why your green walls look so green right now. I would vote for the lighter shade Hearts of Palm. It will still look warm and inviting in that light without being too green.

  12. I really like the Hearts of Palm and think it would look so lovely with your cabinets. Good luck -- choosing paint colors can be such a pain!

  13. Not to add confusion, but it helps me to see a color IN a room. A real room and not a computerized room or paint swatch.

    I love this blog http://www.favoritepaintcolorsblog.com/

I have a green in my kitchen and I don't love it so I won't even tell you the color!

  14. Both are great but I'm a fan of Sassy Green. And such a coincidence, it's painting week at my house too! Going from a buttery yellow in our great room to Comfort Gray. A huge change!

  15. Hi, Richella! Is your room South-facing or North-facing? I'm a green girl, too, and my kitchen is Sprout by SW. I painted 10 different samples (love those $5 samples!) before finding the right shade. My North-facing kitchen made many greens look aqua! When I tried some yellow-toned green samples, I was headed in the right direction. I love Sprout (don't know if they still have it after 6 years), and it goes well with everything! If you'd like, check out my green kitchen color on my blog in the kitchen valance reveal pictures. I also have stained cabinets, so it might help you decide. I hate to go against others, but I liked the Hearts of Palm of the two choices. Good luck with your decision! It's hard, isn't it?

  16. I like the hearts of palm...a softer/lighter/airier color....but whatever you choose, it will be lovely - this is a great kitchen!

  17. I know it will be lovely...whatever you decide. But the 5.00 samples sound like a good idea! Then you can really see what it looks like on the wall.

    Happy painting!

  18. I am a big chicken when it comes to bold colors, but my daughter chose Hearts of Palm for her bedroom when we built our new home. I hated it until all of the walls were covered, but I will say that unless there is white woodwork it can be pretty intense. We had white woodwork and I put a white coverlet on her bed and that seemed to calm things down some. With all of your natural wood, I think it might be pretty bright. Good luck, picking paint colors can be so hard!

  19. I just finished remodeling the youth hall at our church and we used Sassy Green. It is BRIGHT. You may want to consider Shagreen SW 6422. I put it in my laundry room (http://neweveryam.blogspot.com/2013/02/laundry-room-reveal.html) it is a fun green that goes with stuff in the lime/kiwi family that you pick up along the way.
Or, the next paint chip down, which is Ryegrass 6423, for a more intense color.

If you love the color of Sassy Green, Hearts of Palm might be a safer route. ;) You will still feel the pop of color you are looking for. I'm not saying to not use Sassy Green, I just wanted to warn you that it is bright!

PS if you want to see it, I could meet you at our church sometime and give you a tour. :)

  23. I'd go with Hearts of Palm - it will lighten up your rooms and be pretty and fresh. I think the other color (Sassy Green), while pretty, might be a little overwhelming once its everywhere. It might be best as an accent color! Good luck... can't wait to see it.

  24. Here's another vote for Hearts of Palm. The Sassy Green is pretty too, but it appears from the swatches that the Hearts of Palm is a little more soothing.

  25. I'm voting for "Hearts of Palm".

  26. I have an olive green in my kitchen that I'm ready to update but I would like to stay in the green family as well. I love my friend's new color in her kitchen, called "Rural green" from Sherwin Williams---it's a more updated, almost 'trendy' green, but it is SO warm. There is a lot of yellow in the green, so it does have a spring-like feel, yet is a deeper tone (deeper than yours) and works well for Christmas too. I really like your green, but I understand the need for change! ;)

  27. I like theHearts of Palm choice!

  28. Oh, and I do like both the paint colors you are debating on---either works, but I think your space can totally handle the brighter Sassy Green. I don't think you can go wrong with either one though.

  29. Either paint would look pretty with the wood, but which one would look best with the granite?

I like green. My master is SW Bamboo Shoot.

  30. Oooh, I love green--my favorite color! But I have to say, I vote for Hearts of Palm. I think you'll be happier with that in the end because the Sassy Green could look a little bright in certain light, I think. We painted one daughter's room Prairie Grass from Ace (not SW), and it's really similar to your Hearts of Palm. Soothing, I'd call it.

  31. Oh my goodness, did you check out the blog someone recommended above: favoritepaintcolorsblog.com? Today she's showing Seagrass that is beautiful!

  32. I vote for Hearts of Palm, the other is a little TOO sassy for me;):)

  33. I like the Hearts of Palm best.

  34. I personally adore Hearts of Palm, but since your cabinets are light, I think it might get washed out? Perhaps the stronger color of the Sassy Green might be a better contrast. I too love green and have lived happily for years with the colors on Valspar historical chip 6001. Living room is the medium green (blanched thyme?) and an entry accent wall is in the Mark Twain House olive. Dining room in the light shade. I get so many compliments! Go Green!

  35. Last year I painted by friend's kitchen for her when she went out of town and redecorated it with her lovely things...what a fun thing to do for a friend. You Hearts of Palm is very similar to the color we used. Without call my friend and having her go look at the paint can...I might even be the same color. That being said...it really brightens up a lot on the wall. It is certainly green...but does not overwhelm the room. But...at the cost of a sample can...I would paint it on the wall to be sure and look at in different lights. The main concern I have is that it is too close in tone to your cupboards. I actually would be inclined to go even lighter around your cabinets for brightness and contrast. Your cabinets are lovely...but they pull light from the room rather than reflect it. Now you have even one more thought added to the mix. Best wishes for sorting it all out. Bottom line...go with your heart.

  36. I vote Hearts of Palm but you have probably already decided. I have samples of both for my powder room (funny coincidence) and I like the sassy green better for the small space but I think the Hearts of Palm would look awesome in a bigger space (and in your kitchen). Of course, it would be great either way. :)

  37. I think that just in the kitchen area, you should take the ceiling/trim color down onto the upper ledge to give the whole area a cleaner, lighter look. As long as the wall colors stop and start at corners, the change won't look out of place.
