One of my favorite kinds of coasters is the kind of cork-backed hardboard made by Pimpernel and other companies. I think those are very pretty--but they're also very expensive. I was in need of new coasters for my bedroom when I was at the thrift store and spied these beauties:
What? Don't you like Christmas trees?
Well, this part is beautiful:
Four sturdy coasters for $1.00. And all it took was a coating of spray paint to get rid of the Christmas scene.
I wanted pretty coasters to match my homemade bedding, so I used espresso spray paint for the base. Then I added a stencil and
voila!
Custom coasters for my bedroom, all for an investment of $1, a little spray paint, and a little time. Honestly, I think you can spray paint anything! For more wonderful ideas, check out

What a great idea, and an even greater bargain at that price. I love the pretty motif you used on them. :)
Awesome! Now I'll be on the lookout for some coasters next time I'm at the thrift store...
Why don't I ever think of these things? Great idea!
That is a great idea! Why have I never thought to do that? Carla
OOh, I like those a lot! Really cute stencil. :) Good makeover!
What a great idea!! I'll have to try it!
Really cute! I started looking for some coasters recently and was shocked at the relatively high prices. I did buy some super cheap ones at IKEA, but they are pretty flimsy and I doubt they'll last too long.
So cute and such a great re-use idea. I just made some coaster with tiles from HD but I like your idea better! I'll have to look for some inexepensive ones to re-make now!

What a great idea!! Did you seal them? I didn't know if the paint would run if water got on them.
Oh my goodness!!! Such a cute project and your room is so lovely!!! Great job!
Aren't you smart? You'll have to lookout for more of these at a cheap price because they'd make great Christmas gifts.
Well, if that's not clever! I never would have thought to spray-paint coasters, but why not? They really can get so expensive. Love it!
Great idea! I found you at the Shabby Nest :)
