Those special touches

Welcome to my very first party! I'm so glad you're here!

Several weeks ago, a friend of mine was at my house for a party and said, "I love snooping around other people's houses, seeing what special touches they've added. It's fun to get ideas that I might be able to use in my home."

I couldn't agree more! I want to know what special touches you've added to make your house a home.
First, I'll share some of my special touches with you.

As you approach my house, the first thing you see is my front porch. One of my favorite special touches is to have lamps on the porch. I keep compact fluorescent light bulbs in these lamps so that I can keep them burning all the time. They look so cheerful and welcoming, especially at night.

As you enter any house, one of the first things you notice is its fragrance. I have three teenage sons and two dogs, so I have to be careful to make sure our house smells welcoming. My special touch in this area is leather-scented candles. I buy them from DeeJay's Candles, and I consider them as much a secret weapon as a special touch!

I've noticed that one of the rooms in my house most visited by guests is the powder room. I take care to keep this room spic and span. And my special touch here is to keep a bowl of peppermints on the counter. Right now I'm using a small silver Revere bowl that I bought for $1.00 at a thrift store to hold Starlight mints.

Another special touch you'll find throughout my house is very personal decor. I like to decorate with things that are special to me, such as these antique angel food cake pans that belonged to my grandmother,

a wall clock that I made out of photographs of my family (read about it here if you like),

and a tiny pair of shoes worn by my each of my three boys.

See them? They're nestled on top of some art books.

These are some the special touches you'll find in my home. Now how about yours?
Please follow these guidelines for joining the party:
  1. Enter the link to your specific post, not your general blog address.
  2. Make sure you include a link back to this party in your post. (You can also include the button if you'd like.) This will insure that your readers can come here to gather good ideas from other party participants.
  3. If you have any problems linking, please leave me a comment with a link to your post. I'll do my best to get you linked up.
  4. Mingle! Please visit at least a couple of the other participants, so that we can learn from each other and encourage one another.

I can't wait to learn from you.

I love your touches~so thoughtful and welcoming. Leather scented candles?? I'm very intrigued by these. I think I would stop at your front porch and just want to plop down right there. Oh, but then of course I would want to see everything else and snatch some peppermints and look at the sweet shoes. It looks like your party was a success! Happy Mother's Day!! Wait. It is Mother's and not Mothers' right?? :)
