Nineteen candles

See that boy? The one on the left?

Or the one on the left in this picture?

Yes, that one.

He's 19 years old today.

Nineteen years ago, he was a brand-new baby. And I was a brand-new mama.

Not that I mind that he has only one more year to be a teenager. Or two more years to be a minor. No, I don't mind at all. Not a bit. I don't miss those days of having a sweet little baby with curly red hair. I don't long for the days when he was a baby in my arms. I don't miss rocking him to sleep. I don't dream of the days when I was teaching him to walk and talk. Or read and write. Or ride a bike. Or drive a car. Oh, no. Not me.

Of course not.

  5. I was blessed to hold a sleeping toddler for an hour in the church nursery yesterday. My youngest is just 7, and I so miss those baby days!!! It makes me so much more grateful for and intentional about enjoying the present, as I know you do, too! blessings!

  15. Richella, this is such a sweet reminder for those of us who are teaching little ones to read and write and talk (not in that order of course) to hold tightly to each and every moment.

Thank you for your always sweet comments. I want to frame every one of them. Yes, I'm so thankful that my parents began the beach trip tradition with us and that all four of us kids (and spouses) equally love being together for that one week every year. Holidays are tricky because of in-laws and schedules. We don't get every Christmas together anymore but we know we always have our beach week.

Hope your big (baby) boy had a great birthday!
